Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you sell bread?

Not at this time! Pacific Poppy Sourdough currently focuses exclusively on our all-in-one sourdough starter kits.

I created these guides after spending countless hours sorting through conflicting recipes, techniques, and advice online. There are so many different ways to bake sourdough and care for a starter that it can quickly become overwhelming for beginners.

The instructions included in each kit have been carefully written, tested, and refined to work specifically with the starter you receive. Instead of piecing together information from dozens of websites, you can simply follow the guides with confidence and start baking.

  • How long does it take until the starter is ready to bake with?

The starter in your kit is dehydrated, so it first needs to be rehydrated by feeding it fresh flour and water. Don't worry—your kit includes simple, step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process.

It takes about 5 days for the starter to become active, bubbly, and ready to bake. Once it's fully rehydrated, you'll have a healthy sourdough starter that can be maintained and reused indefinitely to bake loaf after loaf of delicious homemade bread.

  • What is included in each packet?

    Each kit includes:

    • 1 packet containing:

      • 10g of dehydrated sourdough starter

      • Step-by-step instructions for rehydrating your starter

      • Easy-to-follow sourdough baking instructions

      • A baking schedule to guide you through each stage of the process

      • A helpful guide covering sourdough basics, recommended tools, tips, and frequently asked questions

  • I am interested in a larger order than is provided on the website- can I inquire about a customer order?

Absolutely! While our website offers convenient 1-pack, 3-pack, and 10-pack options, we're always happy to create custom orders for your special event or occasion.

  • How long will this sourdough starter last?

With proper care, your sourdough starter can last indefinitely—many starters have been lovingly maintained for decades, and some are even over 100 years old!

Once your starter has been rehydrated, you have two storage options:

    • If you bake 3–5 times per week: Keep your starter at room temperature and feed it daily to keep it active, healthy, and ready to use.

    • If you bake occasionally (such as on weekends): Store your starter in a clean jar in the refrigerator. Feed it when you're preparing to bake, and even if you're not baking, plan to feed it once or twice a month to keep it healthy.

With a little routine care, your starter can become a lifelong baking companion—and maybe even something you pass down to the next generation.

  • I have literally never baked before - is your packet enough for me to get started?

Yes! That's exactly why I created these kits.

When I was learning to bake sourdough, it seemed like every recipe required a different list of specialty tools. I wanted to make getting started as simple as possible, so my packets walk you through the entire process step by step.

The only essentials you'll need are:

    • Flour

    • Water

    • A baking vessel with a lid (such as a Dutch oven or similar oven-safe pot)

    • Parchment paper

    • A sharp knife or bread lame for scoring

While there are plenty of fun tools you can add to your collection as your hobby grows—like bread slings, proofing baskets, flour mills, dough whisks, and specialty scoring knives—none of them are required to bake a beautiful loaf of sourdough.

Just follow the guide, trust the process, and enjoy the journey. Happy baking!
